Heard of the prehistoric Silk routes, here is a chance to be the traveller of the same route.
The Silk Road (or Silk Route) was an interconnected network of trade routes across the East, South, and Western Asia with the North and Northeast Africa and Europe. This routes were an important way of cultural, commercial and technological exchange between merchants, pilgrims from China, India, Persia and Mediterranean countries in the past.
The routes, comprising of 5,000 miles, were mainly used for trading luxurious goods such as silk and other fine fabrics, musk, other perfumes, spices, medicines, jewels, glassware as well as help spreading knowledge, ideas, cultures and diseases between different parts of the world (China, India, Asia and the Mediterranean).
Jelep La used to be the main trade route between India and Tibet before Nathu La being the official corridor between India and China. Almost virgin place, not at all touristy and road condition is not bad. Those going from Kolkata, it will be a 12hours train journey to the starting point NJP. And the tour is not too costly for a group of 6-8people. Plenty of accommodations available, which includes hotel, luxurious resorts at some places, bamboo made igloo, wood house, live with locals, so many options.
Following is a 5day tour from Kolkata to visit the place:
Day 1 : NJP > Kalimpong(must visit DELO view point) > Rishi(night stay)
Day 2 : Rishi > Aritar Lake(if you have time, plan for a night stay here, the place worth it) > Thambi (view pt.) > Zuluk(night stay)
Day 3 : Zuluk > Thambi > Nathang > Kupup (Jelep La) > Pedong(night stay)
Day 4 : Pedong > Lava > Rishyap(trek from lava to rishyap through Neora Valley National Park) > Rikkisum > night stay at Rishyap
Day 5 : Rishyap > Lava > Loleygaon > NJP
Alternately you can add Gorumara/Chapramari/Lataguri/Jaldapara or any part of Doors, a night stay in North Bengal's forest must be a memorable experience. A early morning forest trip with open hood jeep or elephant riding and finding some wildlife will then be added to your journey.
